Love it or hate it, ITV 2’s hit TV show “The Only way is Essex” is back for it’s forth series this spring. Filled with fake tan, fake hair and fake friendships, it seems it is undeniably more popular than ever.
But why is it that so many of us tune in twice a week for this guilty pleasure? Many people say it is simply to laugh at the stupidity of the scripted lines, and others can admit that the scandalous scenarios leave them wanting to find out more. Even the most unexpected people can be the most avid fans.
This series sees the absence of three of its original cast members “King of Essex” Mark Wright, Kirk Norcross and Harry Derbrige, and the welcoming of two new members Georgina Dorsett and James ‘ Diags’ Bennewith. Series 4 continues to follow the ups and downs of the relationship between Mario Falcone and Lucy Mecklenburgh, the breakup of James “Arg” Argent and Lydia Bright and still features many favourite cast members such as Gemma Collins, Nanny Pat and Lydia’s mum, Debbie.
The “characters” in the show may act dumb and oblivious to current affairs, with Joey Essex once stating he thought asparagus was broccoli, but they seemed to have used this “quality” to their advantage. From setting up businesses to touring UK Universities, the Essex stars appear to be doing alright for themselves. Even those that claim they have no interest in the show can be spotted queuing up in Liquid to get snapped with a member of the cast.
There seems to be no getting away from the reality TV craze, with the second series of MTV’s “Geordie Shore” also underway. For those of you that are maybe a little too stubborn to have a watch, why not try it? You might even secretly enjoy it!
